Population Boom from Long Distance Moves
As long distance movers, we are fascinated by trends in our industry, because they often reveal a great deal of information, not just about the American economy but also about our collective psychology. One of the most interesting trends over the past two years is that more and more people are moving to Texas and Utah.
Whether you’re searching for a moving and storage company to move to (or from) either of those states from the Bay Area, or you’re just researching moving companies to lay the groundwork for an eventual interstate move, you might want to know: why? What’s motivating this trend?
According to the Census Bureau, five of the top 15 fastest-growing cities in the country (as of May 2014) are in Texas, including San Marcos, Frisco, and Cedar Park, which claimed the gold and silver spots as well as the No. 4 spot. Meanwhile, the Utah towns of South Gordon and Lehi claimed the bronze and No. 5 spots, respectively.
It’s not just the little towns in Texas and Utah that are bursting at the seams. Bigger Texas cities, like Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, are also witnessing population booms. Likewise in Utah, bigger cities like Salt Lake City, Ogdin and Provo are also on the upsurge.
So what’s going on?
Some observers say the American West is experiencing a mini population boom coincidental with the expansion of the energy industry. Utah and Texas, in particular, have robust gas fields and oil fields. These are attracting industries, which in turn are attracting service centers to support those industries. Once a population boom of a certain size gets going, it becomes a kind of self-fulfilling prophesy. More and more people think “Utah is the place to be” or “Texas is the place to make a fortune,” so they head out there. Social pressure does the rest.
Also, both Utah and Texas have low regulatory burdens (compared to places like California). This environment might encourage businesses to relocate to these states.
2021 Update:
Interesting that years later, Texas and Utah are still hot spots to move to, especially in the world of a pandemic. People are leaving California in droves for many reasons. Taxes, the cost of living and more remote working due to COVID has many trying to find a better work/life balance. If you are considering moving to another state, here are the top reasons people are choosing Texas and Utah in 2021.
Texas
- The economy is booming
- You can afford a home
- No state income tax
- Education is top notch
- Great food and music scene
Utah
- The cost of living is lower
- Home prices are lower
- Safety
- Stable economic growth
- Entertainment and recreation opportunities
