Avoiding Damage With Long Distance Residential Moving & Storage

Long Distance Moving & Storage in the Bay Area As you research the options for long distance moving & storage in the Bay Area, remember to plan your packing wisely. The more care that goes into this process, the better your chances will be of unpacking everything intact at your new destination. The following guide can help prevent damage to your furniture, artwork, electronics, and other important items. Boxes and Packing Materials Be sure to match items with the right box sizes and plenty of packing materials when preparing for residential moving and storage in the Bay Area. If you choose boxes that are too small for the things they contain, they could break open and expose their contents to damage. Conversely, boxes that are too large or too heavy can be unwieldy to manage, making them easy to drop when being carried. To prevent things moving around and breaking in their moving containers, you can fill extra space inside each box with bubble wrap, foam packing products, and other appropriate materials that serve as a buffer. Additionally, spend a few moments measuring precious things like artwork and heirloom antique pieces, so you may estimate how much packing material you will need to shield them from harm. Dishware and Glassware Most dishes and glasses are particularly susceptible to breaking during a move. To incur little or no breakage, you should wrap each item separately and pack it with buffering material between each layer (paper plates can work well to buffer dishes, for example). Pack heavier things, such as plates and bowls, at the bottom of the box, and leave the top of the box for glasses, cups, and other lighter items. Don’t forget to fill extra space in each box with materials such as crumpled newspaper or packing paper. You might want to pack breakables in plastic moving boxes or secure plastic tote boxes for further protection. Mark the boxes with words like “fragile” and “breakable” to call attention to them. Furniture Whenever possible, you should disassemble large pieces of furniture, removing table legs, chair wheels, and other parts that are safely removable. You might consider using mattress cartons to keep mattresses clean and sanitary.  Make sure you take photos of each unit before you take it apart, so you can put it back together later with ease. Each part should be wrapped and padded separately, as well as marked for identification. You can use old, clean blankets to give additional protection to larger pieces. Electronics Always take special precautions with electronics. Many flat-screen TVs require special boxes and must remain upright, so there is minimal chance of damaging their screens. Remember to remove batteries from devices and remote controls to prevent them from leaking or overheating during the journey. You should also take DVDs, CDs, and similar media accessories out of electronic devices, as well as ink and toner cartridges from printers. Be sure to remove cables and cords from your electronics, and immediately bind or wrap them and label them. Packing Items for Storage Generally, you can pack belongings for storage as you would when transporting them for a move. If you plan to leave certain things stored for a long time, you might want to give extra attention to dusting, vacuuming, and otherwise cleaning them. Labeling everything will enable you to find it all faster, and this will help prevent unnecessary accidents. To give pests less opportunity to make themselves at home, you can cover furniture in sheets and blankets. Appliances can be wrapped in foam or bubble wrap to protect them, and mattresses and box springs should be stored flat. Know the Restrictions Don’t forget to learn what shouldn’t go in a moving truck or storage unit. This will usually include items such as solvents, fuel, and anything explosive, like fireworks. Other things to leave out may include fertilizers, narcotics, and firearms. If you’re unsure about a particular item, you should ask the staff at the moving company or storage facility.  You may also be required to exclude medications, perishable foods, and plants.
